After New York and New Jersey, the Navajo Reservation has the 3rd most COVID-19 infections. The reservation is nearly as large as the state of West Virginia but has only 5 hospitals. By treaty with the United States they gave up their land for the Reservation and the Federal government was to provide housing, infrastructure, and medical care. The Navajos kept their part of the treaty but the U. S. has been abysmally lacking in fulfilling their part of the bargain. The 175,000 residents of the reservation are poorly treated. The Indian Health Service, year after year, has been woefully underfunded. Reservation residents are 43% below the Federal poverty level which is 19 times that of white Americans, 32% of their households have no electricity, 31% lack plumbing, 38% lack running water, 60% have no access to telephone service and 86% lack natural gas. The U. S. spends $2,834 per person in Indian country, $9,404 on veterans and $12,744 on Medicare. People without access to water have a difficult time washing hands and the lack of medical service puts people in extremely difficult position in getting care.
Our Federal government does little to help these people. This is greatest country in the world yet we treat them with disregard. So, what can we do about it? Contact your two senators. Call them and voice your outrage. Can you imagine living in this’ third world” type of existence? And remember this is the U. S.. If you do not get a return call, call again and demand to know what they have do to rectify the situation and demand action NOW; TODAY!!! Contact by email, too. Also, do the same with your representative in D.C.. Keep after them. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
