photographing ocean sunsets

Considering the stress of COVID-19, concerns over finances and jobs , and Black Lives Matter demonstrations; I thought we might like to have something more entertaining.  So, how to take sunset photos of the ocean.  First, get ready early.  The sun will set and disappear very fast.  If you have not done this before , you will be shocked by how fast it disappears.  This is because the earth rotates 1,000 miles per hour; so be ready.  Second be sure to keep the ocean horizon level in your camera’s viewfinder. The ocean, after all, is level and does not run down hill, so keep the horizon level.  Next; where to place the horizon–never in the middle of your fame.  Either place it across the upper 1/3 or lower 1/3 of your frame.  Normally, for sunset into the ocean, you probably should have the horizon line across the lower 1/3.  This allows for dramatic cloud action.  Try different positions for the sun–in the middle, left 1/3 or right 1/3 of your frame.  Keep shooting and once the sun goes down keep shooting and be alert because some times the sky will have a flash of light after the sun has disappeared.

For other shots of the horizon, you should consider what the sky looks like and what is in the foreground.  If the sky is not very interesting but thing in the foreground are, then put the horizon line in the upper 1/3; keeping in mind to keep the horizon line level.

Next blog will be a miscellaneous one and after that I’ll discuss education and also voting rights.  These two have a long and complicated at times history.
