More and more housing developments are being built near wetlands; often with devastating results of flooding. Ohio is one of 7 states that have drastically reduced our wetlands (according to US Fish and Wildlife Service). Wetlands are natural sponges absorbing 1.5 million gallons of water per acre. (NOAA). They filter pollutants and store carbon dioxide. They provide 1/2 of our seafood harvests and about 1/2 of our endangered species rely on wetlands. So, wetlands are important, but we continue to lose them every year. In 2023 in the Sackett v. EPA, the US reactionary Supreme Court reduced the definition of wetlands to only streams, rivers, lakes and oceans thus reducing wetland areas. Trump has fired hundreds of employees whose job it is to protect wetlands. These employees were in NOAAS, NWS, and EPA. Trump has reduced or eliminate EPA rules, encouraged fossil fuels, and even plans to open back up2 coal burning power plants which are not only terribly polluting but not even economical. So does Trump deny climate change, global warming, or something else. I think our narcissistic president just does not care one way or another. After all he might not be alive into his 80’s so why should he care? He is only interested in what would benefit himself. If the future of our environment tips, it won’t be his problem; it will be our children and grandchildren’s problem.
