With the Voting Rights Act (something the current reactionary U.S. Supreme Court is dismantling) Southern white democrat politicians began leaving the party for the Republican party. LBJ told his young (then young) aid Bill Moyers: “I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it,” he said. ” If you can convince the lowest white man He’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell give him somebody to look down on and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” We as a country are not moving forward. We are sliding back toward Jim Crow and the attack on people of color. Here is an aside. When George Bush was campaigning for the Republican nomination, a book was written about the poorest county in America. Can you guess where it is? Nope not Appalachia; not somewhere in the south. Kansas! What’s the Matter With Kansas by Thomas Frank. The people there were consistently voting Republican even though the party did nothing for them. The people bought the lie that the Dems would give their tax money to minorities. The white citizens bought the big lie– actually many lies– and voted against their own best interests. They demonstrated LBJ’s point. What can we do? Unless you are rich, the Republican party of today does not have your own best interests at heart. Do not buy the lie. Vote them out and if you are able, exercise your first amendment right to protest and to speak out against injustice. We must resist the tyranny being forced upon us by this administration. Now it is Minneapolis; where and who is next? Trump will not rest until we are cowed and living under a police state. Stand up; speak out or we could be like pastor Niemoller. Remember him? If not google him and his quote about not speaking out.
